Children don’t always have the words or skills to express what they’re feeling or experiencing. Sometimes, their behaviors are a way of communicating unmet needs, difficult emotions, or past experiences.
At Hope and Healing Child and Family Counseling, we help children and families understand what may be driving challenging behaviors and develop healthier ways to communicate, cope, and connect.
For children who have experienced neglect, abuse, or other difficult early experiences, certain behaviors may develop as ways to cope or protect themselves.
We help children and caregivers look beyond the behavior to better understand the needs behind it, including:
Behaviors such as lying, stealing, hiding things, hoarding, or difficulty trusting others may sometimes be connected to past experiences, unmet needs, or attempts to feel safe and in control.
